レネ・リートマイヤー 「Existence - kudan house」

展覧会「EXISTENCE－kudan house」で紹介するオランダ出身のアーティスト、レネ・リートマイヤーの作品は、kudan houseのために彼が特別に制作し、周囲との対話を反映した作品となっています。紙を使った作品を通して、形、色、質感、構成、素材を吟味しながら、個人的に感じるkudan houseとの関係性を表現しています。

展示作品は、大きな紙に色を平面に入れることで隔離を表し、作品を集中して見られるよう工夫がなされています。多くの作品では、ブラシをシリーズ毎に使い分けながら油絵具を何層にも分け、厚く塗り広げています。

リートマイヤーは、自分を「画家」ではなく、「オブジェクトのコンストラクター」であると表明しています。そのため、作品はいわゆる「絵画」ではなく、平面に広がる「色－形－オブジェクト」であり、紙の質感に頼らず、色材を引き立たせた特別なものとなっています。　

「周囲との関係性を通して自分と向き合うことは、人生の優先順位や価値観の学びに繋がります。人と繋がり、作品を見てもらうことで、私自身の考えを知ってもらうきっかけとなることを信じています。つまり、作品は私自身を投影しています。それは、フランスのショーヴェ洞窟にある、３万年前の絵描きが描いた手書き作品と大差ないといえるでしょう」とリートマイヤーは語っています。

私の作品は、被写体のイメージをそのまま再現したものではありません。作品に対して持つ、独断的な考えを反映しています。

私が表現したい世界を映し出しているのが、「Boxes」です。この作品に対して感じる知的かつ感情的な思いを、形、色、質感、構成を通して表現し、素材も吟味しました。作品が魅力的なビジュアルであるか、美しい仕上がりであるかについては、あまり重要ではなく、人生や私自身を投影し、表現した世界となっています。つまり、見えている世界を抽象的に模写しているだけではなく、自分の存在を映し出しています。また、作品との対話を通し、自分が世界の一部であるとの認識を深め、さらに自分と向き合い、過去やリフレクションとの出会いを表現しています。

「Time-Space-Existence」は、私の意識を高めてくれる大事な要素が詰まっています。人としての成長過程の中で、人生に対する意識の高まりやその中で生じる疑問を重要視できるようになりました。私は、全ての作品を通して、「here and now」を表現していますが、特にLIFEシリーズの「Boxes」は人生経験そのものを描写しています。

周囲との関係性を通して自分と向き合うことは、人生の優先順位や価値観の学びに繋がります。人と繋がり、作品を見てもらうことで、私自身の考えを知ってもらうきっかけとなることを信じています。

The works in the exhibition, “EXISTENCE – kudan house”, are specifically made for the kudan house and reflect the artists’ dialogue with his surroundings. The Dutch artist Rene Rietmeyer expresses his subjective personal relationship to the kudan house within the larger setting of Tokyo. His works on paper do this with the use of shape, color, texture, composition and the choice of material.

By placing the color planes on large-sized sheets of paper, Rietmeyer achieves their isolation and forces the eye of the beholder to a careful and intensive study of these isolated flat forms. The works on paper are mostly executed in oil colors, applied by brush depending on the series, in many layers or spread in thick coats. The artist sees his work not as painted pictures in a conventional sense anymore, he sees himself rather as a constructor of objects than as a painter.

They present themselves as “color-form-objects” being spread in the plane by setting off the color materials with their specific texture clearly against the support of the paper. Rietmeyer states that; “The confrontation with your own existence as a human in relation to your own surroundings teaches you many things about priorities and values in life.

The communication with other people, either directly or through my work, allows me to make known my thoughts and my presence as a person. But, ultimately, my work is nothing other than the proof of my existence. Not much different than the 30,000-year-old handprint of the painter in the Chauvet cave in France.”

My works do not simply reproduce visual representational images of a subject. The emotionality and subjectivity of my concept are an expression of my own existence and personality. I create an atmosphere that mirrors my very personal subjective thoughts about the subject.

My Boxes create an atmosphere. They transport my emotional and intellectual relationship with the subject using form, color, texture, composition and a conscious choice of the material. Whether my work is visually attractive or not, is not relevant. My objects mirror my thoughts concerning life and thereby, at the same time, also say something about me, my life, regardless whether the result is aesthetically attractive or not.

My work is therefore more than just an abstract reproduction of perceptions; it includes my reflections, my existence as a human being, as well. The dialogue with my own works heightens also my own awareness of my existence as part of this world. It is an encounter with myself, with me as a person, with my past and my reflections. “Time-Space-Existence” are for me increasingly conscious and important factors.

With my ongoing personal development, my awareness concerning life is growing and the confrontation with questions about life itself and my own existence, are taking on increasing importance. The expression of my “here and now” exists in all of my works but especially the Boxes of the series LIFE express my very conscious experiencing of life itself.

The confrontation with your own existence as a human being in relation to your own surroundings teaches you many things about priorities and values in life. The communication with other people, either directly or through my work, allows me to make known my thoughts and my presence as a person.
